If you looked outside watching the pouring rain. Would you notice the girl with her head tipped back and a cellphone clenched tight in her hands? Can you hear the words, "Don't contact this number ever again." When just last week that same number who had someone you treasured above even your own life, was her.

Hair plastered to her face and her tank top molded to her frame. Sweats pants hung low on her bones. Bare footed and the storm was just beginning.

She always thought that something good would happen, now she can't tell if she's crying or if the rain is trickling down her face. Illuminated by the lightning showed a face with hollowed and dark rings under them, showing not just days but years of trying to be positive. To keep the hope alive that she would...be here.

She lifts the phone up to see those words again and it's not just her eyes burning with fresh tears it's her soul as she tosses her phone away with a clearly loud scream even with the thunder roaring over head. "YOU PROMISED! YOU PROMISED YOU LOVED ME! All our....memories..." she chokes on the words as she finally feels her legs give out from underneath her and falls to the ground, feeling every tear take another bit of her heart away. "You promised.....y-you promised we were going to be everything for each other...." through the tears and rain, laughter that sounded borderline hysterical, she looks towards where she tossed her phone now in the hands of a gentle elderly man who was holding an umbrella over them both.
"I know we don't know each other....but my wife saw you. She told me to come and help you inside. We got dinner cooking, a good hearty stew. Plus warmer clothes than this." He gently helped the young lady to her feet. "What's your name ma'am."

"My name..." as they walked away from where she was to cross the street towards his house. "My friends call me Kayte....but I call myself broken."
A short story written about me.
Promises shouldn't just be broken.
